To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease” (Dr Still, founder of Osteopathy) About Us

Osteopathic Philosophy

Osteopathy is a system of health care that looks at the relationship between the body’s physical structure (bone, ligaments, muscles and organs) and its physiological processes. Problems in the body’s framework can disturb the circulatory system or the nervous supply to any part of the body and affect any aspect of health. Thus mechanical problems do not only lead to joint and muscle pain but will also lead to disturbances in the internal organs.

Osteopathy sees the body as a single unit of function. In other words any local dysfunction affects the body as a whole through the way it accommodates and compensates to the injury or disease.

Osteopathy recognizes the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself and its innate intelligence to always strive for a more harmonious balance. Osteopaths place a lot of emphasis on this concept of health which does not simply mean an absence of disease or pain. It is both a state of balance and harmony between the body and the mind of a person and the ability to respond to events that stress the body-mind: accidents, infections, emotional stress.

The Art of Osteopathy in Practice

After taking a medical and osteopathic case history an osteopath will check over your musculoskeletal system looking for any restriction in your movements. Next with the patient usually lying down the osteopath will ‘listen’ with his touch to your tissues to sense the more subtle motions always present in healthy tissues and get a sense of the relationship between the various problem areas as well as a feeling of your vitality and self healing capacity. This will give a diagnosis and prognosis for your condition.

Treatment itself is very gentle, often simply guiding the strained tissue to a point of balance where the body is able to reintegrate it into a better functional state. Treatment is pain free and thus can be applied as easily to a new born as to an adult or elderly frail person. It is usually very relaxing and gives you a better sense of overall well-being.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial Osteopathy extends osteopathic concepts to the treatment of the head. It requires specialized training that includes detailed study of the skull and its sensory organs. It relies on the skilled ability to palpate subtle motions in any tissue and applies gentle pressure to improve drainage and nervous supply to the area that is being treated. It is the treatment of choice for children for example after a difficult birth.

Osteopathic Education

I obtained my osteopathic diploma in the UK in 1988 after a 4 year full-time study that included conventional medical diagnostic skills to complement my osteopathic training. Osteopathic principles are well supported by current scientific models. I have done extensive postgraduate training especially in cranial osteopathy which I also  teach to other osteopaths.
